One more Quick Update

June 2nd, 2016 by Dr Ian Walker

Had someone withdraw after accepting earlier today, who happened to be a non-Albertan.  Thus we just made another waitlist offer to a non-Albertan.  Currently we have 4 Albertan and 1 non-Albertan positions that are still unspoken for, and an equal number of offers pending.

  • Hello Dr. Walker,

I am checking the feedback that I have available to me under the App Status tab of the UCAN site and I have a few questions. I can not find where it says what percentile my GPA put me in for the GPA component of the application. Is this information not released to applicants? Also what was the minimum total percentile required for an IP to receive interview?
Thank you very much for your time, W.

    • So, good question. Not sure why it is not displaying. As we are well into the next cycle, we have bigger IT fish to fry, so I cannot promise that it will be fixed any time soon. What I can tell you is that last year, the mean GPA for all applicants was 3.73, with a standard deviation of about .15. You should be able to ROUGHLY figure out a relative percentile based on that. This past year, we interviewed about a third of the applicants, both Albertan and non. Sadly, that percentage of applicants getting interviewed has been going down on an annual basis for the past several years.

  • Hi Dr. Walker,

Just wondering when the individual file review scores will be released for the previous year’s application. These would be helpful in preparation for the upcoming/current application.

    Thanks.

    • Probably in the next couple of days. I have to say that I would debate your contention that they are helpful in the preparation for the upcoming cycle, however. We release them, not because we think they help people (in fact, to the contrary, I think people obsess over them and imbue them with a degree of importance that is not warranted), but because applicants are entitled to them under FOIP, and we don’t want to have to process hundreds of FOIP requests every year.

  • Thank you Dr. Walker, these updates really help a lot! Please keep them coming until orientation if possible! Thanks!

  • Dear Dr. Walker,

A prospective student applying in the 2016-17 cycle here. Just wondering when will the new CARS cutoff for OOP be posted? Will it be 128, 129, or higher in the upcoming cycle?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Dr Walker,
Does that meant that 4 Albertan and 1 non-Albertan spot have been offered and you are waiting for responses, plus there are 4 more offers that have yet to go out?
