Waitlist update June 6, 2018

June 6th, 2018 by Dr Ian Walker

We have made a few more offers off the waitlist this week.  We are giving people just two days to respond, in an effort to sort out our class composition as efficiently as possible.  At this point there is likely to be a trickle of action for the next couple of weeks.  Even once full (we currently have 4 offers out that have not been responded to), there will be a couple of people who change their mind and decide to go elsewhere, which sometimes results in a  bit of a cascade.  Bottom line is that we are not done yet.  If they have not already done so, the office staff will be notifying people low on the waitlist that there is not a reasonable expectation of getting an offer this year.  We think this is a fair and transparent thing to do, and also allows people to get on with their lives, take up other opportunities, etc…  Once the class is full, we will notify all but the top 5 remaining people one the wait list.

  • Hello Dr. Walker,

I was just inquiring as to when in June the Pre-MMI scores will be released for unsuccessful applicants?

    Best

  • Thank you very much for your open and honest responses, Dr.Walker. You provide a ton more information than many other medical schools and I appreciate it.

  • Hello Dr. Walker

Is there a break down by Albertan students versus non-Albertan candidates being selected from the waitlist or will the remaining positions only be offered to Albertans due to proximity? This was mentioned by you in a previous post and I think should be addressed at this time as well.

    Thank you

    • I am not sure what proximity has to do with anything. It certainly does not play a role in our offers. The waitlist offers are done based on the final application score. There is no separate wait list for Albertans or non-Albertans. The only caveat is that is we fill 15% of our class with non-Albertans, then the non-Albertan component is capped and we don’t make any more offers to non-Albertans, but that hasn’t happened in years.

      • I appreciate the response. I was just concerned that the closer it gets to start of class offers to fill the class could be more difficult for out of province candidates accept.

  • Hi Dr. Walker,
Thank you for the update! I want to ask how many total offers have been send from the waitlist and a rough prediction on how many more we could expect based on the 4 open seats?

    • I think we have sent out about 30. Don’t know off the top of my head. Not sure how many more. Wont be that many. Maybe 10 more at this point? I would likely have more success predicting the weather.
